In June, I guess, James and his partner, Bruce Beard, went to Richmond, Virginia to meet with the Baptist Foreign Mission Board. James and Bruce were screening prospective foreign missionaries, and the Board was very pleased with their work. They sent James and Bruce to the Board meeting to better understand how the psychiatrists worked and how they could work together.
The first morning they met together, and James had a heart attack sitting with the others around the big table.
Some time during the summer when he was convalescing, he said to me that he thought we didn't have to worry any more about Jim's not recovering completely from his difficult time at birth. Well, I hadn't been worrying, for he certainly seemed great to me.
While James was in the hospital, he decided that he would join my church so that we would have a unified family.
He had just turned 34 and was soon to celebrate Jim’s second and Carolyn’s eighth birthdays when he died of a second heart attack in a Fort Worth hospital.
