It bothered me that James worked such long hours. Of course we had been through the internship when he was on call most of the time. I would not have wanted him to be less conscientious, but I was lonely. I guess I wanted him home for Carolyn and Jim more than for myself.
But he was so needed by the community. He was the first reputable psychiatrist in Fort Worth and there were many patients in need. He pioneered a psychotherapeutic approach in contrast to the excessive use of electroshock therapy dominant in the city prior to his arrival. All his patients adored him. He just became a member of each family that he helped.
I never saw James really angry and never remember him getting mad at something or someone. Nor did his mother get mad. Daddy Bent was the one with the temper.
James had a very smooth temper. Was very interested in people and what made them tick. My grandson Steve’s inquiries remind me of James, who liked all of the details.
