Cook Falls in Snake Pit

When Carolyn was about three, Beth Ann lived with James and me for a while. She was fashion coordinator for Cohen’s Women’s Wear then.

It was my job to have dinner ready for her and James every evening.

One day, someone brought me “The Snake Pit.” I read all day—only looking after Carolyn’s needs.

When Beth Ann and James came home, nothing was done and there was no dinner made. That book really captured my whole attention.

At one time James and I belonged to the Book-of-the-Month Club, but we stopped that and chose our own books. We used the library in the city of Galveston, and of course later in Fort Worth.
