James and I had no car, then, but we lived across the street from the hospital, and there were good bus routes then. We lived on the bus line to town.
Either friends took us to the grocery store or we walked. No problem. All our friends were poor.
We were within walking distance of the beach also. Cars were not as important then as they are now. James had no car when we were first dating. He used his Dad’s car then.
The buses ran every five to ten minutes from the Medical School area to downtown and made a loop on the other side in the red light district. I’ll never forget the first time we rode on down into that district. I had heard about and read about it, but didn’t actually believe that there would really be these girls sitting on the porches, in the windows, and all around the houses with the really truly red lights burning.
