When Christmas was approaching, we made plans to go back to Commerce for the Holidays, and I could hardly wait to see my beloved “Mama,” Aunt Eva, Uncle Bill, and Beth Ann.
The day we were to leave , we awakened to a beautiful blanket of snow. On our bed in the teacherage was a blanket of snow that had seeped through the old roof. The uncovered floor had big cracks where the wind blew in.
It was so beautiful and I was so excited, jumping around with delight until Mother said, “You know what this means, don’t you? Dan won’t be able to come get us so our trip is off.”
Disappointment hit with a bang: Two weeks alone in that desolate place? Ouch !
After school we looked out, and there was a brand new Model A car sitting in front of our teacherage. Aunt Velma and the girls had zoomed over the mountains to come for us to go on our Christmas Vacation. She was definitely our Good Fairy.
