Great Depression?

Black Friday 1929 must have happened while we were out there, but I don’t remember it. It would have meant nothing to us in that wild ranch territory.

The Depression didn’t affect me much. We didn’t have much of anything, but I didn’t know that. At sometime, some of the teachers were given “script” instead of money for a period of time.

I was reared in a home of all women, Mama, who was my grand-mother, Aunt Lura, Mother’s sister who never married, and my mother, Mother. Women didn’t discuss politics much in the days of my childhood. So I remember nothing about Hoover as president.

Mama always taught me to be respectful of the office of the President, though. Guess I am less critical of the man who is president. It must be a miserable, thankless job.

All my family was Democrat, “dyed-in-the-wool Democrats,” as Aunt Eva would say. In those days, Democrats were the Southerners and Republicans were the Yankees—with an adjective that I don't use.

Wow, have times changed.

I try to keep an open mind about political issues. I don't consider political issues as "cut and dried" as they did. I try to keep an open mind, although I don't want to lower my values.
