
Family legend tells that Cornelius lost all his savings during the Civil War. I don't know the facts nor the absolute truth about that. But I assume that Cornelius and Emmaline moved to Texas about 1860. He must have sold his holdings in Alabama and received Confederate money for them.
Before he got to Texas, it is said, Confederate money became worthless and they were without funds. Now I have no way of proving any of that. It's just a story.
On the first of March, 1862, Cornelius enlisted in Company D of the
17th Texas Cavalry. Evidently he had a horse. He fought in some battle in Texas, and on the 30th of August, 1862, he was discharged with a "sore leg."
