Summer fun with Uncle Dan's family

I loved the summers. Mother and Lura were home, some of the older cousins would come stay with us and go to school.

Uncle Dan and his wife Velma and their children would come from Athens for summer school, and I loved being with so much family. All the teachers studied, and the children played.

Sometimes Uncle Dan made homemade ice cream. Yum! I think they put real cream in it.

Uncle Dan sorta scared me, though, sometimes. He was a big tease, like my son Jim, and it was hard for me to accustom myself to that, but I did love him.

He used to tell some stories about Europe and the war. He loved the songs that they sang, and I have an old wartime book of his.

Uncle Dan came home from World War One with the names for his daughters to be. Moselle for the river in France, and Juanita from the song, “Nita, Juanita.” I don’t remember the words to that song, but my cousin Moselle is still living in 1997, and she will. I’ll talk to her one day soon.
