A Graduate and a Working Woman

I graduated from San Angelo Junior College in May, 1938. My business administration professor had helped me get a temporary job in a jewelry store as bookkeeper the last few months of my second year. He also recommended me to the Shannon Memorial Hospital as secretary to the Business Manager, and I began that job when school was out.

While I was working at the hospital, Nelle worked for a furniture company.

My work at Shannon Memorial was very rewarding. Mr. Head, the business manager was a great man. Like a father to me. He was very good to me, and I think I was helpful to him. I really enjoyed my work there, and the people working in the hospital became like family to me.
At that time there was no hospitalization insurance plan anywhere. Mr. Head and some of the other West Texas hospital administrators saw the need and began to organize one. I did most of the correspondence for this venture, which eventually became Blue Cross of Texas.
