A Fateful Encounter

One day at an assembly program, we had a special treat. The high school seniors came over to entertain us with their senior play—The Hunchback of Notre Dame [the image at right is from the 1923 film version, starring Lon Cheney]. “The Hunchback” himself was handsome, even hunching.

His voice was enthralling, and I was simply mesmerized by his performance. Guess I fell in love that day!

Imagine my surprise when I was in “real’ high school the next year having lunch in the cafeteria. As I checked out, there was Quasimodo himself, working his way through San Angelo Junior College by checking in the high school cafeteria.

One day a week I had my violin lesson at my regular lunch hour and ate alone ordinarily afterwards. Soon the College Man joined me after his work was finished.

I’m sure I never made intelligent conversation, for I was still mesmerized by this handsome fellow. Eventually he graduated and went away to the University of Minnesota, but I never forgot him.
